Chaos Weaving is an extinct art, it was last practiced by a sect of elite Nherru magi during the Bloodstained Aeon. It is perhaps fortunate that the Chaos Weavers of Nherru did not have their sanctum in Nherru itself, but rather in an outlying city, otherwise their records likely would not have survived the burning of Nherru and scholars of magic history would not have access to their collected research. (Though more than just Nherru mages had access to Chaos Weaving, it seems that only the Nherru sect remained by the end of the Dissolute Time of Poorhouses.)
The power of Chaos was said to be virtually unlimited by scholars of magic, however completely unusable. The first Chaos Weavers discovered how to literally weave strands of ethereal chaos* innate in all forms of magic into themselves, then manifest this power however they wished. Early ventures in Chaos Weaving were either inexplicably random, or violently destructive. It was learned that Chaos Magic could not be held in check for more than a few moments, as it's very nature caused it to lash out at the ordered existence around it. In the end only two viable applications for the art were discovered:
Influential Chaos involved rapidly "threading" Chaos through a desired object or individual, then returning it to the Weaver before "unravelling" it. This was for a long time incorrectly thought to be a form of enchantment, however it became clear that Influential Chaos Magic leaves no lingering traces of itself, only permanent physical alterations. It's uses were many and varied, and mostly unpredictable, though the results (depending on the skill of the Weaver) could be influenced by the type of object used as a focus.
Obliterative Chaos is the type that Chaos Magic was more commonly known for. Users of Obliterative Chaos were able to channel unparalleled destructive powers with minimal drain on themselves. Against another spellcaster of equal talent, Chaos Weavers would have vastly longer staying power, not requiring to draw on their own reserves of "magic".
Training to become a Chaos Weaver was time consuming, as much as 40 years was required to become a fully fledged Chaos Weaver. This is a likely cause why Nherru's number of Chaos Weavers dwindled rapidly early in the Bloodstained Aeon. It required periods of intense meditation, and some degree of "mental chaos" (insanity.) Though by the end of the ordeal, a Chaos Weaver would become oddly calm and rational, evidently the training ridded perspective Weavers of their psychoses, despite it being a prerequisite to apply in the first place. A downside of the training process was that it left nearly no time for study of conventional magic. Chaos Weavers thus could only ever practice Chaos Weaving.
The last use of Chaos Weaving is also the most well known, as it left a lasting mark upon Xothu. Children of Blood had dispatched the entire contingent of Chaos Weavers to defend the border at the Orbicht Mountains. Evidently they encountered a vast host of Crusaders of Cicazl. In the ensuing conflict, and no one can be certain whether this was intended or not, the Chaos Weavers blasted one of the nearby mountains into pieces. The enemy force was crippled by falling debris, and beat a temporary retreat. After the incident, the Chaos Weavers found themselves without powers, and vanished into obscurity.
It was, centuries later, discovered by Night Orc sorcerers that Xothu's supply of Chaos** had been exhausted, thus nullifying the art forever.
*It should be mentioned that Chaos Weaving was the manipulation of magical chaos, which could be considered a substance of it's own (only insofar as magic can be a substance). The manipulation of so called natural chaos by other magical arts is entirely unrelated, and has vastly different effects. Unlike "magical chaos", natural chaos is not a recognised phenomenon and is at this time merely believed to be just part of how the universe works.
**All traces of "magical chaos" from which Chaos Weavers drew their power were evidently utterly obliterated in the blast, the same way a single burning hut can ignite and burn an entire village.
