Ceremonial masks of silver-inlaid copper, worn by previous emperors of Shetugu and kept deep within the Silver Ziggurats, in the fabled Theater of the Coffin where a heavy curtain separates the antechamber from the catacombs where the ashes of deceased emperors are kept in bronze jars, and also symbolically separates the world of the living from the world of the terungou.

The Haunted Masks are each forged of beaten copper, with thin horizontal slits for the eyes and mouth, and inlaid with silver in geometric designs that approximate the facial features of each emperor who wore them. This means that no two Haunted Masks are alike. It is unknown exactly how many Haunted Masks there are, but the tradition has been upheld since before The Dissolute Time of Poorhouses, so estimates range from 60 to 80 in all.

It is said that the Emperor has the power to call upon the spirits of his ancestors, who enter the Haunted Masks and cause them to float past the curtain and into the antechamber, where they perform a sacred version of the classic Shetugou square dance. The Emperor interprets the message of the spirits by a mixture of divination and intuition, interpreting such variables as the specific masks present (not all the spirits will appear at once) and their motions in the dance. However, for fear of angering the terungou and incurring bad luck on his entire empire, he is only permitted to do this once in his reign.

It is doubtful that the current emperor, Tahutshouna Tahutba, has called upon the spirits yet during his reign.
