Sometimes called 'Pirate Dwarves', this is a misnomer - except for the occasional small pirate clans.
Sea Dwarves are, as one may assume, seafarers. They are master shipbuilders, longshoremen, and traders. They tend to be taller and leaner than most dwarves. They have dark skin and black hair, though their eyes are either blue or green, with occasional purple. Unlike other dwarves, they have very little body hair.
Sea Dwarves live in clans or "fleets" of gigantic Dwarf-Ships that ply the oceans and islandways. They often have permanent settlements on islands, but some smaller fleets are completely independent of land. Ships are run by a "Compass-Master" who is usually a matriach, and a "Prayerwright" - a priest and archivist who is usually male.
The clan-fleets were supposedly founded by Barrugar Who-Heard-The-Waves, a great dwarven shipwright who took his friends and family to sea to escape war with the Orcs.
They are, as one may guess, the best swimmers among a race known for sinking like a rock.
Over the ages they have swarmed to the The Eight Hundred and Thirty Three Islands, despite the fact they were little help to the human inhabitants there during an ancient invasion.
They worship Octhoros, who they invoke as "Island-Maker" and "Lord of the Water Paths" as well as any-other sea gods. Like any good sailors, the Sea Dwarves take all precautions. Many change rituals to the appropriate god for areas visited. However, it seems Octhoros has a special meaning to him, as he provided them shelter during their early years.
Sea Dwarves, in general, are a gregarious, trading people. They are literate, social, and surprisingly well-tempered compared to their bretheren. They can at times be overcautious, which comes from life at sea, but can also be mistaken for standoffishness or scheming. Their exception to their sociability is Orcs and Ogres which they hate with the power of tradition, and they collectivelly call "The Brutes."
