Sultan Jalarawa I, The Grand Elephant, The Lord of the Jungle, The Prince of Forty Heavens, Before Whom the Very Mountains Tremble.
The ruler of The Elephantine Sultanate. An enormous, mechanical elephant, Jalarawa's origins are shrouded in mystery- he emerged from the jungle around twenty years ago, ousting the bandit-king Dakka the Jackal from the city of Guth and fulfilling an ancient prophecy. He was promptly made Sultan of the city, and ushered in an era of prosperity that lasts to this day.
The People of Guth regard him as a god, as the bringer of peace and prosperity to their city, and as a leader- they constructed a special, gigantic stable for him to reside in, and saw to it that he is attended day and night by no fewer than forty engineers.
For his part, Jalarawa seems content with this arrangement; he has yet to be heard to speak in public, conveying his decrees (which are generally rather sensible) to the public via a group of scribes and priests. Those who have heard him speak- scribes, priests, wandering monks, and a few, select foreign dignitaries- describe a beautiful, low, musical voice that seems somehow infused with magic, and which possesses a strangely persuasive, hypnotic quality which prompts them to agree with him. Fortunately, he seems to have restricted this hypnotic power to negotiating favorable trade agreements for Guth.
He also seems to have a fondness for philosophy, and will routinely engage the Tumbruk monks and other holy men that frequent the city in debate.
(1)a laktha is about two and a half feet, thus, Jalarawa is almost 30' tall, a very impressive figure.
