The Winter Warden is a flightless bird roughly the size of a chicken, though not as bulky (which is surprising for an animal that spends more than three quarters of it's life hibernating). It is silvery white in colour and has stumpy wings that end in three long feathers. Winter Wardens live for decades, however they are only ever active during winter, hibernating for the rest of the year. They can be seen emerging from hollows beneath tree roots (their preferred habitat) at the first sign of snow, and after a quick feed they seek out a mate. After mating, Winter Wardens will lay their eggs and both parents will stay with them until they hatch (after one to two years). They mate once every ten years or so, and do not partner for life.
Both they and their eggs are thoroughly inedible, and in some cultures they are regarded with an almost spiritual reverence so it would be faux pas to even suggest eating them. There are many folk tales relating to the Winter Warden's role in the coming of snow, and winter.
Winter Wardens can be found in Nova, Thass, Asivis, and Orath. Though they are notably absent in the far northern parts of Thass and Orath.
